What type of octane gasoline are you using in your Crown? I see that Toyota's site recommends 87 octane but some people are reporting premium unleaded only is what we should use.
I’m in Atlanta GA and have personally not seen 85 or 88. All pumps here are 87, 89 and 93. For now, I’m sticking with 87. I didn’t notice ma difference going from 87 to 93 other than cost.Where do you get 87 octane fuel? I've been watching for a while, and all of the pumps around me are either 85 or 88. Haven't seen 87 in a long time! (Not that I think there's a huge difference). What I really hate is the "winter blend" our state requires. Haven't driven my Crown enough to notice the difference, but in my other vehicles there's a consistent 1-3mpg difference.
0-60 runs and mpg changes are hard to tell. It can vary in so many scenarios. It needs to go on the dyno against 87, 91 or 93 octane. I can only go by what I feel and I’m not tripping out. Some more oomph is definitely there. Mine is to new putting it on one and needs to break in further. Maybe another member can do it in the meantime?!?! Don’t you find it strange to boot the Lexus has 360hp using premium and Crown 340hp using regular. They are the exact same power trains. Putting premium in the Crown matches the Lexus at 360hp is my best guess. I can’t put my money where my mouth is as once again, it needs to go on a dyno.Do some 0-60 runs and/or do a MPG comparison with as identical as possible routes and mileage?
Everything I know about octane suggests higher octane != more power unless the car is designed for that. Turbos start out with "low compression" then effectively have higher compression as the turbo jams more air+fuel into the cylinder. So I'm not exactly sure how that would work. The owner's manual seems pretty clear that 87 is all you need. The "or higher" is what keeps us all guessing though I suppose. From what I've read, the turbo is 11:1 compression which feels high to me. But the 2.5 na engine is 14:1 and definitely only needs 87 so now I'm even more confused. 🤷♂️
Once I'm broken in and after 1st oil change (1000m ish) I'll give it a try. Mine is still new too. I have an app that can track a 0-60 pretty well.0-60 runs and mpg changes are hard to tell. Nothing personal and with all due respect. That isn’t going to help. It has to be on a dyno to get the full picture. Maybe I can get it on one once broken in since all I am feeding it is premium. Then maybe, we can get another user on a dyno that uses regular exclusively. 🧐 Only then, it will be very telling and interesting! 👍Once I'm broken in and after 1st oil change (1000m ish) I'll give it a try.
